To: Sarfaraz Khan, BBMP Joint Commissioner (Solid Waste Management and Health)

Open garbage burning is illegal. Enforce the ban on open garbage burning in Bangalore now!

Why is this important?

Bangaloreans can no longer brag about the ‘natural air-conditioning’ in the city. The summers are getting hotter and garbage burning is adding to the heat. Open burning of garbage is a common practice around the city. It is so normal that most people don’t even know that it is against the law.

Particulate matter on Bangalore’s busy roads is 6 times the limit prescribed by the World Health Organisation. Garbage burning greatly contributes to the existing urban air pollution which is known to reduce the lives of Indians by over 3 years. The cocktail of toxins that are released while burning garbage is extremely harmful to humans, causing growth defects and cancer in children.

Jhatkaa is launching a campaign to tackle this issue in our city. We’re calling our digital campaign #BangaloreIsBurning because our city is being smothered under the smoke of burning garbage.

Here is the problem: The burning of garbage represents a whole systems failure. It’s what happens when there’s overconsumption, littering, not enough waste segregation, too few sorting facilities, and not enough landfills.

But the good news is that there is no shortage of solutions. If the BBMP makes this a priority, and invests/enforces accordingly, we can not only end garbage burning in our beautiful city, but it will also be major step forward in addressing the problem of waste management itself.

We already have 4 Indian cities on the list of 10 most polluted cities in the world. Let’s not add Bangalore to that list. Let’s help Bangalore be recrowned as the ‘garden city’ of India.

Join us in telling the BBMP that garbage burning is illegal and the ban on open garbage burning must be enforced immediately!

Bangalore, Karnataka, India

Reasons for signing

  • Survival of mankind.
  • I am sick to death of breathing in polluted air. I am pregnant with my first child, and at this very moment, there are 3 piles of garbage being burnt near my home; and we cannot keep the fumes out of the house, even with all the doors and windows closed. What kind of harm is this doing to our children? It is not our children's fault, but they are expected to live with it.
  • We, tax paying citizens are harassed by BBMP officials and contractors in equal quantum by such short sighted attempts

UPDATE: 5 months after we launched the #Bangaloreisburning campaign, BBMP Joint Commissioner (Solid Waste Management and Health) Sarfaraz Khan has issued penalty orders for open garbage burning!

WE WON! Now every time a contractor burns garbage they will be fined.

The order states that despite the fact that that BBMP has provided sufficient infrastructure for waste collection, the number of garbage dumps and garbage burning is increasing. Hence, penalties for irregularities and indiscipline in waste management have been issued according to the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Amendment Act 2013. This applies to not just garbage burning, but dumping of garbage as well.

It is important to ensure that contractors are being penalized and Zonal Commissioners are held accountable. This can be done by showing a copy of the order below to your local BBMP ward office.

UPDATE: On 14th July 2016

Jhatkaa volunteers met with Mr. Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner (SWM / Health). He accepted our petition and promised to penalise errant contractors who were violating the law by burning garbage.

However, he did say that the BBMP is unable to monitor violations and he wants us to be his “eyes and ears”.

So if you see garbage being burnt take a photo and WhatsApp it to 7676-022-555.
